Evelyn Richter –  The Mircale of Human Development

LOOCK Galerie is delighted to announce the first solo exhibition of Evelyn Richter’s work in Berlin, featuring the photographer’s project The Miracle of Human Development.

In 1978, Richter and psychologist Hans-Dieter Schmidt worked closely together on Entwicklungswunder Mensch (German title), which explores early child development from birth to the start of elementary school. By assigning equal importance to both text and photography, this book represented a new style of non-fiction in the GDR. With five editions and circulation of 100,000 copies, it achieved remarkable success for Urania Verlag.

The formal approach of the photo book enabled Richter to create a compelling narrative through the sequencing of her images. She also invited fellow photographers to contribute to the publication, including Sibylle Bergemann, Christian Borchert, Margit Emmrich, Bernd Heyden, Ute Mahler, Helga Paris, and Brigitte Voigt, whose work will also be shown at LOOCK Galerie.

This exhibition will be accompanied by a panel discussion—participants include Annekathrin Müller and Michael Junge—on Saturday December 9, 2023 at 4 PM.
