Natalia Stachon – The Noise of the Sun

In the exhibition The Noise of the Sun, Natalia Stachon presents a new body of work created over the past several months.

For this series, Stachon has worked with the traditional mezzotint technique. In this process, a copper plate is completely roughened, creating a deep black surface when printed. The surface is then polished, allowing drawings to emerge from the black and producing a sense of depth and volume through the technique’s tonal range. The subsequent steel-plating of the copper plates alters the colour of their surfaces and reveals a new aesthetic quality: the drawings on the plates can only be perceived under certain conditions. It is only through the deliberate incidence of light and the movement of the viewer that the motifs become visible. They appear and disappear again, shifting with the angle of view and creating an almost cinematic effect.

Out of the ordinary, the metal plates themselves take the center stage in The Noise of the Sun as their own autonomous artistic objects. Only a small, limited number of prints will accompany the series as a portfolio. The works turn their attention to the traces left by human activity in landscapes - to subtle shifts as well as profound transformations. These observations give rise to a multifaceted image of contemporary landscapes, evoking the complex relationship between human beings and nature. Here, a sense of beauty and a sense of loss exist side by side.

Since September 2021, Stachon has been a Professor of Sculpture and Drawing at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in the Department of Design.
